Acne affects roughly 80% of people at some point in their lives. While genetics, hormones, and other factors play a role, many cases can be improved with a consistent, gentle skin-care routine and supportive lifestyle choices. What causes acne?

  • Acne most often begins when pores become clogged by excess sebum (oil), dead skin cells, and bacteria.
  • Hormonal fluctuations, genetics, stress, certain medications, and diet can all influence oil production and inflammation, making breakouts more likely.
  • Skin that’s irritated or over-dried can actually respond by producing more oil, so aggressive treatments aren’t always the best first step.

Gentle, effective daily care

  1. Cleanse gently

    • Wash your face twice daily—morning and evening—with a mild, non-irritating cleanser. Avoid harsh or strong cleansers that strip the skin.
    • Use a soft washcloth or your hands; be gentle and avoid scrubbing. Over‑scrubbing can inflame acne and worsen texture.
  2. Skip abrasive exfoliants

  3. Keep skin hydrated

    • Hydration is not the same as oiliness. Oily skin can still be dehydrated and compromised. Use a lightweight, non-comedogenic moisturizer that soothes and supports the skin barrier. We recommend our Unscented Goat Milk Face Cream with Shea butter.
  4. Target inflammation carefully

    • Look for soothing, anti-inflammatory ingredients such as goat milk and 100% pure ingredients.  
  5. Don’t over-dry or over-treat

    • Avoid repeated applications of strong drying agents. Overuse of alcohol-based toners or high-concentration benzoyl peroxide without guidance can cause flaking and irritation.

Lifestyle and diet considerations

  • Diet: Some people notice a link between certain foods (high-glycemic-index carbs, dairy for some individuals) and breakouts. Consider tracking your diet and acne to see if patterns emerge, and consult reliable sources or a nutrition professional if you want to experiment with changes.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water—adequate hydration supports overall skin function.
  • Sleep and stress: Prioritize sleep and stress management. Chronic stress and poor sleep can worsen hormonal balance and inflammation.
  • Avoid touching your face frequently and keep items that contact skin (phone screens, pillowcases, hats) clean.

  • If acne is moderate to severe, causing scarring, or not improving with gentle care, see a dermatologist. Prescription topical treatments, oral medications, or in-office procedures can be very effective and should be tailored to your skin type and needs.
