Soothing Dry Skin Naturally
Many people struggle with dry skin — those persistent, itchy, flaky patches that just won’t go away. Causes range from environmental factors (cold, low humidity, hot showers), to diet, genetics, hormones, and sometimes infection or medication. If you have dry sensitive skin or generally sensitive skin, small routine changes can make a big difference. I’m not a doctor, but I prefer natural options first; below are gentle, practical steps that have helped me and others.
Start by reviewing everyday exposures for easy fixes. Laundry detergent, fabric softeners, and scented dryer sheets are common culprits. I once switched detergents and several family members developed itchy, dry areas; switching back cleared the problem. If you have dry sensitive skin, opt for fragrance-free, hypoallergenic detergents and avoid fabric treatments that leave residues on clothing and bedding.
Rethink cleansing habits. Many skincare products list water as the top ingredient, but water alone doesn’t hydrate skin — it can strip oils and contribute to dry skin, especially when combined with hot showers or baths. You don’t need to give up warm baths entirely; instead, choose a gentle, hydrating cleanser and keep showers short and lukewarm. Pat skin dry rather than rubbing, and apply moisturizer immediately while skin is still slightly damp to lock in moisture.
For those with sensitive skin or dry sensitive skin, consider switching to milder, more nourishing cleansers and avoid man-made fragrances - there is a big difference between essential oils and fragrance oils. Goat milk soap is a naturally gentle option: its creamy texture and naturally occurring fats and proteins help hydrate and soothe irritated skin without harsh surfactants. Many people with dry skin find that using our goat milk soap as their daily cleanser reduces tightness and flaking. Follow with a rich, fragrance-free goat milk moisturizer or another emollient that is formulated for sensitive skin to restore the skin barrier and reduce flare-ups.
Other helpful tips for managing dry skin:
- Use a humidifier in dry indoor environments to maintain moisture in the air.
- Avoid long, hot showers and harsh exfoliants that can strip the skin barrier.
- Choose fragrance-free, dye-free skincare and laundry products labeled for sensitive skin. - Apply moisturizer morning and night, and reapply to hands or areas that wash frequently.
- Wear soft, breathable fabrics (cotton, silk blends) against irritated skin.
If you try these simple swaps — gentler detergent, a hydrating cleanser like goat milk soap, and prompt moisturizing — many people see meaningful improvement in dryness and irritation. If dryness, redness, or discomfort persists or worsens, check with a healthcare professional or dermatologist to rule out underlying conditions and get personalized treatment for sensitive skin or dry sensitive skin.
Goat Milk Bar Soap has NO water in it and it actually hydrates and nourishes your skin. No stripping, just clean, fresh, healthy skin! And there is no scum left on you!
ALL Natural Goat Milk Liquid Soap has water. It is still very rich, silky and much less drying that commercial brands. With all the hand washing necessary lately, you will be very happy to have a soap that will not dry out your skin!
Moisturizers are also free of water. These are my favorite to use directly after my shower. You will not need much so be careful to not over do it! You will be greasy. Your skin will feel amazing and look great!
Hand and Body lotions have some water, but goat milk is the first ingredient and if the oils are combined, then water is third. They are very rich and creamy, absorb quickly and are great for on-the-go applications!
By the way, I really do use my products on my goats because they get dry skin!
